(More) Robots coming to your ASC... don’t forget about these issues.
We recently saw an interesting article from our friends at Becker sharing Kevin Lobo’s (Chair and CEO of Stryker) insight into how robots are increasing in ASC’s across the country.
Like Stryker, Orthos has seen the use of robots becoming more and more popular at ASCs, with orthopedic surgery as one key field. Orthos has seen this trend in both its own facilities - focusing on orthopedics- but also those focused on other specialties (e.g. ENT, general surgery, OBGYN, etc.).
In order for you to know if it's a good idea (assuming your hospital isn't already using a robot), we wanted to share some quick notes from our team to help in your decision making process:
Admin overload: Although there is added efficiencies to using a robot, there is a risk that comes from not having an RCM department that can keep up with the administrative process. We’ve seen up close that robots present a variety of challenges from pre-cert to coding to collections. If you’re organization is considering making the $1MN+ investment, you can’t ignore the administrative work that helps you collect on the work you performed.
Don’t ignore setup: There are added efficiencies when utilizing new technologies, so long as they're set up correctly by an experienced operator. Mistakes can happen that lead to worse outcomes overall due to lack of experience operating outside the scope of care. Make sure your implementation plan is treated with the same focus as your buying process.
Check with your payers: If we’ve learned anything in RCM it is to treat all payers with a “trust but verify” mentality. Before filling up block times and dropping claims, make sure your RCM team is communicating with your payers to ensure coding, pre-cert and billing isn’t missing a painful (and costly) learning curve when billing a robot.
The team at Orthos can help ensure your investment in a robot is well spent.
